Lower blepharoplasty is aimed at creating a smooth contour to the skin immediately below the eyes. The lower eyelid contains a larger amount of fat than the upper lid. In many patients, this fat bulges forward, creating bags and dark circles under the eyes.
Excessive skin in the lower eyelids create fine wrinkles and lines, which also contribute to a tired, older appearance. Although unsightly changes to the lower lids occur over time and aging, these features are sometimes genetic and may afflict a person starting from a young age.
Lower blepharoplasty may be performed either through a small incision through the skin just beneath the lower eyelid lashes or through an incision on the inner surface of the eyelid. Both options lead to a hidden incision which is not visible after healing.
Dr. Kim believes a conservative approach to lower eyelid surgery is necessary in order to prevent an unnatural, overly pulled appearance to the lower eyelids. Overly aggressive removal of skin or fat can lead to a hollowed appearance to the eyes or downward retraction of the lower lids.
